Warka Water 4.0: the evolution of water harvesting

Nowadays, water has been a matter of importance in the vast majority of the countries after experiencing drought for a few days or months due to climate change, reason for which many tips on how to remediate drought days for a while have been published for our knowledge. But many countries experience water scarcity as a life style, one not chosen but instead it is the reality of their dry environment. Envisioning a solution or yet a device in this case, with the capacity of obtaining water from nature’s alternative sources, has been a task from the team at Architecture and Vision, an international and interdisciplinary team led by Arturo Vitori, Architect and Co-founder of the Research and Development Studio: Architecture and Vision and today, the team has managed to expand in size their innovative-award winning device for a new challenge.


Warka Water 1.0 Italy

With vision as the main course of this team, the project Warka Water has been developed with water provision for places lacking infrastructure or water bodies, a device for regions with potable water scarcity and poverty requiring no machines to be built, only local hand-crafting and local materials. Warka Water has scaled up to version 5 this year and has entered into the group of 15 semifinalists for the Buckminster Fuller Challenge 2015. For this challenge, the team plans to upgrade the already  introduced Warka Water 3.0 to the community of Ethiopia as version 3.2 in hopes of an extended design that will be multiplied in many places, with the vision of reaching the 4.0 version to be showcased in Italy like in 2013.

The structure is bio-inspired or biomimetic. Many insects like the namibian beetle absorb water from dew and fog at specific times of the day and Warka looks forward to imitate this behaviour as efficiently as possible, with the goal of acquiring 100 Liters of water a day. The shape, which resembles the endangered Warka Tree is made of locally sourced materials like bamboo and natural fibers in addition to polyester ropes and mesh, which continuously evolve in order to achieve the best structure possible. The structures are objectively designed to be built in 1 day with only $1,000.00 spent with the previously mentioned method, materials and performance.Screen Shot 2015-09-12 at 5.04.57 PM

It is of great satisfaction to help other communities in need of basic utilities such as water and this project has made this promise a reality since the beginning. As their goal is to expand all over Africa, a country with urgent need of this device, and previous designs have succeeded, it is evident that Warka Water will have an outstanding future at harvesting water, watering crops and hydration for the people in need.
